Hospital Pharmacy Professional Development Program

Target Audience

This program will be of interest to individuals in hospital pharmacy practice in a variety of settings including acute care, long term care and ambulatory care; and will focus on the development of pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy and pharmacy management skills.

Format

This is a two week program consisting of workshop sessions, lectures, and discussion sessions as well as a period of practical experience in a Hosptial Pharmacy Department. Two days each week will be devoted to workshops and lectures and three days each week the participants will gain practical pharmacy experience through a pharmacy practicum. During the practicum, individual participants will be matched with designated mentors who are hospital pharmacists in practice. In addition, the participants would be invited to participate in department seminars and meetings, make site visits to other hospital pharmacy departments or community pharmacies.

  • Pharmacy Systems, Techniques and Technologies (pharmacy management software, unit dose packaging systems, tablet and capsule counters)
  • Pharmacy Practice and Administration
  • Current Issues and Best Practices in Pharmaceutical Delivery
  • Prescription and Dispensing of Drugs
  • Approval of Drugs, Drug Formulary
  • Procurement and Pricing of Pharmaceuticals
  • Managing Drug Usage and Costs
  • Inventory Control and Formulary Management
  • Adverse Drug Event Reporting
  • Therapeutics Assessment University of British Columbia

Pharmacy Practicum Could Include the Following Activities

  • Introduction to the host Pharmacy Department Heads and staff
  • Briefing on the Host Hospital
  • Tour of the Host Hospital
  • Shadowing and mentoring with hospital pharmacist in practice
  • Practical experience in the hospital pharmacy
  • Participation in Department activities including meetings and seminars, continuing education
  • Review of Policies and Procedures
  • Review of Budget Documents and Processes
  • Review of Staffing Plans and Processes
  • Review of Quality Assurance Program
  • Review of Accreditation Process and Documentation
  • Other Activities of Interest to the Participants
